How To Set Ideal Ford Tire Pressure

In any vehicle, it is important to ensure that the tire pressure is always set at the right level for maximum comfort, safety and handling. Fuel economy and emissions are also affected by tire pressure. Making sure that it’s optimal is therefore critical for you to make your driving experience both affordable and enjoyable. As a Ford owner, don’t only check the tire pressure when going on long trips. Always make sure that the tire pressure is ideal at all times, and the benefits you will reap from this will be felt from the get-go. This is how to do it:

Fords with TPMS Systems

If you own a Ford that has a tire pressure management system, ensuring that the tire pressure is optimal becomes much easier. Later models even consider the temperature of the tires to give you an accurate idea of the tire pressure status in each individual tire. In addition to all the above, this reduces wear and tear on the tires, so it will be cheaper for you in the long run.

To ensure that this works correctly, you need to observe the following:

  • The Valve caps need to be fastened properly after each top up: Every time you open the valve cap for any reason, ensure that it’s firmly fastened in place afterwards. Typically, this cap is responsible for measuring the tire pressure and then relaying this information to your screen. If the cap is not set tight, it might not be able to get the right reading. If one is lost, always replace it with a valve cap from the same manufacturer, and with the same product number. Essentially, it should match exactly with the valve caps on the rest of the tires.
  • If changing tires, always get the same brand and size as the rest of the tires: You might want to change one tire for a variety of reasons, such as when it has had a bad puncture. In this case, make sure that the tire you get is exactly identical to the rest of the others. This will make it easier for the TPMS system to give you an accurate tire pressure reading on that particular tire.
  • Rotate your tires: To reduce wear and tear on the tires and to keep them from leaking, rotate them periodically as advised in the user’s manual. Make sure you pay attention to detail about how the rotation should be done, especially if your Ford runs on unidirectional tires.
  • Don’t neglect a TPMS warning: When a tire pressure warning light comes on, don’t ignore it. Have the tire pressure checked on the tire sending the signal. Delaying in this could result in severe damage to the tire and/or the rim, necessitating expensive repairs. Also try to find out if there is a leak related to a puncture which should be repaired if possible.

When You Need to Replace All Tires

There are some scenarios where you may need to replace all the tires. In these cases, find out the ideal tire pressure for those specific tires. Depending on your TPMS type, you can then enter the ideal tire pressure range, so that the system can monitor the tires more accurately. If the pressure falls out of range, it will advise you on which tire has a problem and what pressure it is at currently. Some of the scenarios where you might want to change tires include when getting studded tires when it’s snowing or offroad tires if you want to go rock-crawling. This requires special tires which will have different tire pressure characteristics.
