About Plaquemine, Iberville, La
Plaquemine, Louisiana is a small town with a population of about 8,000 people. It is located in Iberville Parish and is the parish seat. The town was founded in 1775 by French colonists. Plaquemine was named for the Indian word “palquema,” which means “yellow earth.” The town played an important role in the Battle of New Orleans during the War of 1812. Today, Plaquemine is a popular tourist destination because of its historic downtown district and its location on the banks of the Mississippi River.
